Energy Savings (ESOS)

The government has introduced a scheme called ESOS (The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) which will be mandatory for all UK businesses of a certain size and turnover.

What is ESOS?

The scheme requires businesses to undergo an energy audit to calculate the total energy consumption in either £’s or kwhs, across all buildings, transport and industrial activities. This is due to the UK having to implement Article 8 of the European’s Energy Efficiency Directive. The overall intention of the scheme is that ESOS Energy Audits have the potential to increase your businesses profitability and competitiveness by identifying cost-effective savings which, if implemented, will improve energy efficiency.

Who does it affect?

In a nutshell, these audits will be necessary for all businesses with 250 employees or more, or a turnover of €50m or more (as of 31 December 2014). There are various ways that your business may or may not qualify, for example whether you are part of a larger group or owned by a foreign company. As these are fairly detailed and complex, we at Torse are able to give you more detailed guidance to ascertain what your business’s requirements will be. If you meet the above criteria you will need to ensure that at least 90% of your total energy consumption is subject to an ESOS compliant energy audit, a Display Energy Certificate, a Green Deal assessment or a certified ISO 50001 Energy Management System.

When do the audits have to be completed?

These audits will need to be completed and submitted to DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) by 5 December 2015, and additionally ever four years after.

How can Torse help you?

The Environment Agency is going to be publishing more details of how to comply with this scheme later in 2014, at which point Torse will be able to guide you through what is required and act as your provider for Energy Consumption Disclosure reporting.
