The London School of Economics recently published whitepaper, Energy Risk Management for UK Business, concludes that the risks associated with business energy will continue to grow over the coming years.

The report continues that the increase in financial, legislative and reputational risks associated with business energy mean that within today modern and often complex environment, organisations need to put into place strategies to reduce their exposure to potential risks.

Digital Meters

The Government has passed legislation requiring all suppliers to replace both Electricity and Gas meters with automatic meters for all (but the smallest) businesses by 6th April 2010. It might sound a long way away, but they will have to change 200,000 meters.

Guess who pays? The government has allowed suppliers to pass on all the costs to businesses. This will be either through your supply contract (much the same as it is for most businesses at the moment) or a separate AMR Metering contract. This will inevitably cause some confusion when Renewing or changing your Gas and Electricity supply contracts; the business or whoever looks after your Energy Supply arrangements will generally be able to assist in this area. This information really belongs to the business and so you can sort out all your own metering arrangements and not just keep paying the supplier.

To provide you with an overview of how the gas and electricity industry works, we have done some research and found this very media friendly video produced around 2 years ago [so a little out of date but the basic facts remain the same]. It explains the way the gas and electricity network works in relation to consumers and suppliers. Worth a viewing to get an overview of the subject matter.

Whilst liberalisation of the market is an imperfect method of improving the situation for both Business and Domestic customers, this along with some legislative requirements on the part of the government has shown some improvements. Some of the regulatory bodies discussed in the film were from a Business Energy Consumer fairly toothless in terms of addressing some of the hardline tactics of most suppliers. So once again Businesses need to be smart, manage their energy carefully otherwise it will cost!
